Ms Robertson Recommends Episode 1

It's a Ms Robertson Recommends Post

There are so many things out there that we can read or listen to.  And that is without counting music, the radio, watching series on TV.  I am talking about things to do with science - things where you learn new things.  Those that know me (in a teaching sense) know that I love a video.  ****** once said that a picture paints a thousand words - well if that is the case what about an animated picture?!

The phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" can be traced back further than the 1911 advertisement shown above.  Prior to Brisbane or Barnard it is said that Leonardo da Vinci wrote that a poet would be "overcome by sleep and hunger before [being able to] describe with words what a painter is able to [depict] in an instant".  In fact even Napoleon Bonaparte got in on the act and can be quoted as saying "A good sketch is better than a long speech".

These blog posts are going to be short and they are going to recommend a podcast or a video or an article on a particular subject.  I will link it to the curriculum where I can too.  So sit back and relax, open your ears, open your eyes and open your mind to something a little different.

If, like me, you suffer with allergies throughout the year; or are one of the others that gets hayfever during the summer then you will have heard of the pollen count.  What is the pollen count AND how do they calculate it is the topic of this podcast: SYSK: Pollen Count.  I love the Stuff You Should Know podcasts - they have been going for years and are two guys (usually) chatting about (generally) useful stuff.  So, follow the link and have a listen - you can always skip the adverts.

Let me know your thoughts via the comments below.

Ms Robertson; over and out.

MsR Fun Fact: pollen is so small that what we see is, generally, groups of pollen grains joined together.  Also these little grains are the male gametes of the plant.
